ABOUT US

Since 1927, H. L. Clausing Inc. has been producing mirrors and optical coatings. Our customers include research, universities, military and industrial.
Over these many years, we have coated optics for almost every application imaginable.
Our coatings and technology have evolved over the decades and we continue to produce state of the art coatings for today’s applications.

The company was founded in 1927 by Leroy M. E. Clausing. Leroy was a radio engineer who built many of the early radio stations in America. These stations included WBBM in Chicago and KSTP in Minneapolis.
Leroy was also an amateur astronomer. Upon studying the work of John Strong regarding evaporated metal mirror coatings, Leroy began to experiment with the process himself. This ultimately led him to leave the radio business and begin focusing entirely on optical coatings.
The business has continued on for three generations of the Clausing family. Since 1989 it has been owned by Howard L. Clausing under the name H. L. Clausing Inc. Howard graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1985 with a B.S. in physics. He started coating mirrors at only 10 years old. Over the years, he has designed coatings for hundreds of unusual and custom applications.

The Clausing family has been engineering coatings for three generations. We have designed coatings for thousands of applications. As such, we have a tremendous amount of proven coating recipes. ENHANCED ALUMINUM COATINGS

H. L. Clausing Inc provides outstanding Enhanced Aluminum coatings for Visible & Near IR bandwidths.
These coatings are commonly used for telescope mirrors, flight simulators, point of sale displays and many other medical & industrial applications.
In addition to our design capabilities, we also have the necessary high precision spectrometers and reflectance accessories to accurately measure optical performance from 190 nm to 25 microns.
Coatings can be applied to substrates ranging in size from just a few mm to over 84″ in diameter and 5000 lbs.
Enhanced Aluminum coatings have a wide variety of uses.

OPTICAL COATING TESTING

H. L. Clausing Inc has tremendous in-house optical testing capability. This allows us to accurately develop new coatings as well as provide stringent quality control. We also offer optical testing as a stand-alone service to customers who require specialized testing or independent verification.
We have the ability to test spectral ranges for the UV, Visible, Near-IR and IR bandwidths (190 nm to 25 microns).
